Spiralling Dialectically Through the Tripartite Matrices
Speaker: Carla Penna
Respondent: Dieter Nitzgen
Study Day Respondents: Marina Mojovic and Robert Snell
Large Group Convener: Gerhard Wilke
This lecture introduces Pichon-Rivière’s concept of ‘dialectic spiral’, which describes the movement between the inner and outer world of persons and their contexts. This process is conceived as a spiralling multidimensional field where progressions and regressions promote new understandings, but also resistance and paralysis in the sessions. This dynamic interplay will be discussed in connection with group analytic groups in tripartite matrices.
Carla Penna, PhD, is a psychoanalyst and group analyst in Brazil. She is a member of the Group Analytic Society International. Chair of the Analytic Section at the IAGP. She is a past president of the Brazilian Group Psychotherapy Association. She published, in 2014, in Portuguese, the book Inconsciente Social [Social Unconscious] and, in 2023, From Crowd Psychology to the Dynamics of Large Groups, by Routledge.
