IGA/GASi Library Report

Elizabeth Nokes

The Library has continued to operate from my dining room table, courtesy of the IGA laptop, and a remote connection into the desktop files – which has an annoying habit of random disconnections .. but we carry on …  Forays have also been made to the building, when nothing but hard copy will do – for making scans for new reading list items, supplying books and papers for loan and etc.

Interest was generated in the ‘Tavistock Library Corporate subscriptions’ which can be obtained by IGA/GASi members via the IGA Library.  Because the ‘advert’ for same was inadvertently left off the IGA e-Notice Board, it was sent as a separate message [memo to self for next year – this is clearly the way to do it] and generated far more interest than is usually the case.  Because the Tavistock operates the sub in blocs of 5 for £150.00 each, we then entered uncharted territory, where we had – not enough / too many, and ended up with a ‘last chance saloon’ advert for the fifth place to complete an existing list of four, for the final bloc of 5.  So a lot more members are benefiting from this very useful resource, and able to access all the resources of the Tavistock Library direct.  The IGA Library still retains its sub and is able to service all members via this.

Members have offered donations of items for the Library:  we are in dialogue with Dr Vivienne Cohen’s family about papers relating to early IGA training, and also with Ros Pines about material from the late Malcolm Pines.  As a general principle we don’t take anything that is offered – we don’t have the space to house it, or the time to sort and check it, and would generally ask members who wish to donate material to check the Library database, to see if we already hold it, or at least to send us a list of suggested offerings.  Material surplus to Library requirements could be retained by the putative donor until such time as more ‘normal’ systems obtain, when we could offer such material for sale to members/students, proceeds going to the Library book fund.

The Librarian continues to monitor the operation of copyright law for the IGA/GASi, in respect of individual requests for scans, compliance with the CLA [Copyright Licensing Agency] requirements for the supply of full text material on the VLE, for IGA student reading lists, and in respect of content for the PPP ‘Dynamic Resource List’.  Copyright is a legal matter and it is important that as a professional body the IGA/GASi demonstrates full compliance.
