On 3rd November 2026, our field lost an exceptional and irreplaceable talent.
Dr. Earl Hopper was a profoundly insightful and pioneering figure in group analysis.
A sociologist, psychoanalyst, group analyst, and organisational consultant, Earl distinguished himself as an extraordinarily creative and productive thinker, writer, and scholar. He was also a generous mentor and a cherished friend to many. His contributions to the development of the field’s core theories have profoundly shaped our understanding of groups, social processes, and the human experience.
Earl’s impact remains unparalleled and is reflected in the extensive body of papers, books, and interviews he leaves behind – work that will continue to guide, inspire, and influence both us and the wider discipline for years to come.
Below we share an interview conducted with Earl on 11th September 2020.
Further material and details of an event to commemorate Earl’s life and work, to follow.
